A bathroom is the most technically demanding room in a home per square metre. Water, drainage, ventilation, electricity and heat all meet in a small space, and every one of them has to be resolved before the first tile is chosen. How we approach a bathroom project

Design starts with the fixed points: where drainage can run, where the risers are, what the floor build up allows and where ventilation can be taken. In a renovation these constraints are usually inherited, and they decide how much of the layout can genuinely change. Knowing this at the start avoids the familiar situation where a finished design turns out to need a soil pipe moved through a structural slab.

Only then does the layout follow. The sequence people use a bathroom in, the door swing, the sightline from the doorway, the distance between the shower and where a towel actually hangs: these are what make a bathroom comfortable, and none of them appear in a materials list.

Materials and the local climate

Abuja's humidity and temperature range affect how materials behave. Natural stone is porous and needs sealing and a maintenance routine that the owner has to be willing to follow. Large format porcelain gives the appearance of stone with far less upkeep. Timber and veneers need to be specified for wet area use or kept clear of splash zones entirely. Metal finishes vary widely in how they tolerate humidity, and the difference between a coating that lasts and one that spots within a year is not visible in a showroom.

We specify against how the room will be used and serviced, and we tell clients where the maintenance burden sits. A material that looks right but demands quarterly attention is a fair choice if the owner knows that in advance, and a poor one if they discover it later.

Lighting, ventilation and comfort

Bathroom lighting fails when it relies on a single ceiling fitting. We work in layers: even light at the mirror for grooming, which means light on both sides of the face rather than above it, general light for the room, and low level light for use at night. Colour temperature is kept consistent, because mixing warm and cool sources across a small reflective room makes every surface look wrong.

Ventilation deserves the same attention. Extract capacity has to match the room volume and be positioned to actually move air across the shower, otherwise humidity settles into joints and finishes and shortens the life of everything in the room.

Small bathrooms and storage

Compact bathrooms reward planning more than large ones. Wall hung sanitaryware makes the floor read as continuous and simplifies cleaning. A shower recess built into the wall keeps bottles off the floor. Mirror units with concealed storage add capacity without adding visual clutter. Consistent tiling and fewer material changes make a small room feel larger than dividing it into decorative zones.
